Every year, we celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. (MLK) Day with a Day of Service. This annual event is one of our many “Best Place to Work” practices and provides a great opportunity to boost morale, engage employees, educate the workforce about diversity, and influence the business community.
With the company’s support, InfoMart’s I’M Giving committee coordinates details with the organizations selected for the Day of Service, and recruits volunteers from our employee base. We encourage all our employees to volunteer for local causes that benefit our communities. As an added incentive, we provide our employees with lunch and their usual pay while they volunteer. This year, InfoMart visited Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta (CHOA) at Scottish Rite, The Center for Children and Young Adults (CCYA), and 7 Bridges to Recovery. Nearly 20% of our workforce donated their time in support of a wide range of projects benefiting these respected organizations. “Our employees are always enthusiastic about our annual Day of Service.” said Tammy Cohen, President and CEO of InfoMart. “Giving back to the local communities where we live and work helps us realize what an important role we all play in making our world better.” Hosting a Day of Service for your employees allows your employees to work together outside of their office environments and is a great avenue for fostering team building and workplace pride. Plus, the kids are always excited to meet new people. “They ask the most random, off-the-wall questions,” said Vallen Bohannon, Manager of InfoMart’s Criminal Department. “They’re curious about everything, so talking with them really tests your knowledge and ability to explain things.” Other national organizations that welcome volunteers include:
  • American Red Cross
  • American Cancer Society
  • Susan G. Komen Foundation
  • March of Dimes
  • United Way
  • The Arthritis Foundation
You can also join your city’s celebration if you don’t have the means to organize service events. Some cities host parades and rallies that are open to the public. You don’t have to put on an elaborate celebration or multi-location service program to honor MLK Day, but it is an excellent opportunity to get your entire workforce engaged in education and the celebration of diversity and civil rights.
