Mixed Results for Workplace Meth Use
According to a new survey by Quest Diagnostics, one of the nation's leading providers of employer drug testing services, the number of individuals testing positive for methamphetamine use dropped in 2005 and fell even further in the first quarter of 2006. The report shows an 8% decline of positive methamphetamine tests in 2005, followed by a 10% decrease between January and May 2006.
The study suggests that the decline is due, in part, to local, state and federal law enforcement efforts to shut down meth labs. The regulation of products used to make meth – such as certain cold medicines – also has contributed to the decline in availability of the nation's third most popular drug, behind marijuana and cocaine.
While the study shows that drug use of all types is down among American workers – according to the numbers, a 17-year low in positive drug test results of all controlled substances - the methamphetamine results aren't necessarily something for employers to cheer about.
Though the report indicates a two-year decrease in meth use, the results are a return to 2002 levels after a spike in usage from 2003-2005.
