Accountant Steals $2.8 Million from Employer

On January 30, 2008, John Hoeffner was sentenced to community service and probation and ordered to pay restitution for embezzling nearly $400,000 from his former employer, Bovis Lend Lease. But that didn't stop him from using a similar scam to bilk his new employer, Tishman Construction, out of millions of dollars.

According to prosecutors, when Hoeffner incorporated a business called Mr. John, he had no plans to specialize in the portable toilet business. Instead, he used the fake company to help him steal $2.8 million dollars from Tishman Construction where he worked as an accountant.

Hoeffner would make checks out to Mr. John and, after a Tishman executive signed them, he would add his last name to the recipient line and deposit the money into a personal account. Through this method alone, he embezzled $60,000 from his employer.

Using another fake company called A.J. Splescian, whose name was similar to that of an actual surveying company, Hoeffner stole the remainder of the $2.8 million by altering checks made out to the surveying company.

Hoeffner has been charged with grand larceny. He faces 20 other charges and could spend a maximum of 25 years in prison if convicted.

Prosecutors said that Hoeffner used the money for a number of things, including sending $230,000 to a woman in Colombia. Almost $105,000 went toward a down payment on a house in Queens, $9,000 toward closing costs and $53,000 to two plastic surgeons. Nearly $1.3 million of the embezzled funds could not be traced.
