Little League President Charged in Thefts

The president of Maine's Freeport-Pownal Little League is facing felony theft and forgery charges after being accused of embezzling more than $10,000 from the league.

John Rooney, who served as the league's president for two years, is accused of stealing checks and forging signatures to obtain money from the league's account. Freeport Police officials indicate that Rooney has a history of similar activity, but specifics about the previous cases were not revealed.

The national Little League governing body and its divisions conduct background checks on all volunteers, including presidents. However, the screenings consist only of checking volunteers against state sex offender lists. The national group has plans to increase the requirements, but only in that volunteers will soon be screened against a nationwide sex offender list.

Rooney's case and other similar incidents of embezzlement could lead to more stringent background checks for local leagues.
