Fighting the Rise in Resume Falsifications
With the unemployment rate in the United States hovering around 9 percent, it should come as little surprise that unemployed Americans are clamoring for every open position and looking to gain any edge over fellow applicants. For some, desperate times call for the desperate measure of resume falsification.
Resume falsifications are on the rise and will likely continue to increase as the current economic downturn lingers on and unemployment rates continue to rise. Statistics already suggest that as many as 50 percent of all resumes contain some degree of alteration.
In recent months, InfoMart has observed an alarming increase in false information provided by applicants on resumes and applications. Dates of employment are padded by months and years, job titles are inflated and the reasons given for termination are completely opposite from what really happened. For example, an applicant may state that he was laid off by a previous employer; however, the verification uncovers that the applicant was actually terminated for a company policy violation.
InfoMart has also found that former supervisors and co-workers will often falsify basic employment verifications in order to help a friend land a new job. To combat this falsification trend, InfoMart recommends contacting the employee's former employer and verifying employment through Human Resources to obtain an accurate employment history. It is best practice, and how we conduct our Basic Employment Verifications, to verify through a previous employer's Human Resources Department rather than take someone else's word for gospel.
