Background Screening for Online Dating?
In early July, TRUE, a leading online dating service, launched a national campaign in support of legislation requiring all online dating services to conduct criminal and sexual offense background checks on their members. Or else, if the service chooses not to perform background checks, prominently disclose to its members that no such precautions were taken.
"As an industry, we have an obligation to increase the safety of our customers to the greatest extent possible, and we look forward to welcoming additional advocates from across the United States who will soon be joining this important cause," said Herb Vest, CEO and founder of TRUE.
Less than two weeks after launching the campaign, TRUE has gained political support from lawmakers in three states. Senator John Carona and State Representatives Will Hartnett of Texas, William J. Seitz and Scott Oelslager of Ohio, and Dave Albo of Virginia have all publicly embraced the legislative movement.
"Millions of consumers are using online dating services and millions more will join in the future. It is imperative that we make them as safe as possible," said Texas Senator John Carona.
