Report Provides Snapshot of Metro Area Substance Use
According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMSHA), the two U.S. metropolitan areas with the highest rates of past month illicit drug use are San Francisco (12.7 percent) and Detroit (9.5 percent), surpassing the national average of 8.1 percent. With regard to binge drinking, only Chicago and Houston - with 25.7 percent and 25.6 percent respectively - had higher rates than the national average of 22.7 percent.
The NSDUH Report: Substance Use in the 15 Largest Metropolitan Statistical Areas: 2002-2005 compares rates of illicit drug use, binge drinking and cigarette smoking for the nation as a whole with the country's 15 largest metropolitan areas. In 2005, an estimated one-third of the U.S. population lived in the 15 largest metropolitan areas.
The survey defines illicit drugs as marijuana/hashish, cocaine and crack, inhalants, hallucinogens, heroin or prescription drugs used non-medically. Binge drinking is defined as consuming five or more drinks on the same occasion at least once in a 30-day period.
Metro areas with rates of illicit drug use lower than the national average include Houston, Dallas and Washington DC. Los Angeles, Riverside/San Bernardino, Washington DC and New York all had rates of binge drinking lower than the national average.
