Background Screening Increasing Globally

With the continued expansion of the global economy - particularly in India and Asia - comes an increased demand for international background screenings. As with most growth, this shift away from pre-employment screening as a Western-centered practice isn't without its challenges.

Consider the following:

  • There are 27 different ways to spell the name Muhammad.
  • In India, each person born there has a biological date of birth and one that reflects when the birth is officially recorded.
  • A history of government monitoring of citizens in China makes residents resistant to company background checks.
  • A single university in Mumbai turns out about 100,000 graduates each year.
  • The issuing of credit is a relatively new practice in India, making credit checks nearly impossible.
  • In India and much of Asia, a criminal history search requires a visit to multiple police stations.
The amount of growth alone in India and Asia offers unique challenges. In the United States, a projected 1.5 million new jobs will be created this year. That number is dwarfed by a predicted 20 million new jobs in China, and 12 million in India.

Easier times should be on the horizon in the world of international background screening, though. India is currently considering a national identification system, and other countries are contemplating linking background screening with the application process for work visas.

Over the last 10 years, InfoMart has seen a growth in the demand for international background checks. We have met this demand by making our domestic searches available in a number of foreign countries.
