Former Non-Profit Employee Arrested for Sex Crime

Earlier this month, outside of Asheville, North Carolina, sheriff detectives arrested 36-year-old Kim Kelly for soliciting sex with a child by computer. Kelly, of Cary, North Carolina, had driven to Asheville for what he thought was a meeting with a minor.

Just two weeks before being caught in the internet sting, Kelly had worked at the Southwest Wake YMCA. Sheriff officials say there is no evidence that Kelly solicited any children at the YMCA. YMCA officials are downplaying the arrest of a former employee, but also say security and screening changes are in the works.

Kelly's arrest comes just weeks after 27-year-old Justin Taylor was arrested for indecent liberties with a child who was involved in a YMCA program at an elementary school in Wake Forest. Taylor was a current YMCA employee at the time of his arrest. The YMCA has since started auditing hiring and background screening procedures.

Parents who send their children to the Southwest Wake YMCA remain supportive of the organization, but some are pushing for criminal background checks that extend beyond North Carolina and aren't limited to searches for sexual offenses.
