Retail Employees Biggest Culprits in Gift Card Fraud

According to an educational session at the recent National Retail Federation Loss Prevention Conference and Expo, when it comes to gift card fraud, retail employees are the most likely culprits.

Even with projected annual sales of gift cards in the $900 million range, this issue can have an adverse impact on a retailer's bottom line. According to session statistics, 75 firms reported losses of nearly $72,000 each year to fraud. Sixty-two percent of gift card losses are attributable to employees.

Retailers are concerned about these thefts not only because of financial losses, but also because it can have a negative impact on a customer's experience in the store. When an employee keeps a validated gift card and provides one with no value to a paying customer, the retailer often requires the customer to go through a lot of different steps to resolve the situation.
