Just What the Doctor Ordered?

According to the Drug Enforcement Administration, the abuse of prescription drugs ranks second only to cocaine usage in frequency. Although the abuse of prescription drugs in the workplace is extremely common, it often goes unrecognized as the root of work-related problems.

Nearly 30% of drug users rely on the use of prescription drugs. As reported by the National Institute on Drug Abuse, the most commonly abused prescription drugs fall into three classes: opiates, depressants and stimulants. Opiates, given for pain, can lead to physical dependence and addiction when taken over long periods of time. Sleep disorders and anxiety disorders are often treated with depressants. If a physical dependence occurs after abuse, harmful effects can occur including seizures. Stimulants, often prescribed for asthma and narcolepsy, when taken in high doses can cause paranoia and hostility.

In addition to effects on the individual, pharmaceutical addictions impact the workplace. Reduced productivity and absenteeism top the list. In addition, safety on the job can be impacted when the use of machinery or motor vehicles is involved.

An effective drug-screening program, along with an understanding of the ramifications of prescription drug abuse, can assist employers in ensuring the safety of all employees and clients. InfoMart's drug screening program includes four different drug screening panels and can be customized to fit your company's needs. Without comprehensive screening, the repercussions of prescription drug abuse are endless and inevitable.
